Oaks Bottom Forge Field Trip Photos
In March, on two separate days, we had PPS members visit Oaks Bottom Forge in Southeast Portland. It is a co-op forge where about 15 blacksmiths make a variety of knives and tools. They also teach classes to help people get started smithing and leathercrafting. They also sell their knives and other products. Everyone we met was excellent and we had a great time – we highly recommend checking out Oaks Bottom Forge. Their website is: http://www.oaksbottomforge.com
Special thanks goes out to the blacksmiths, who were more than accommodating working with photographers hovering around. It was really fun!

Field Trip: Hippo Hardware
On Saturday Jan. 9th we had about ten photographers visit Hippo Hardware in NE Portland, on the corner of 12th and Burnside. This three-story store sells home decor, everything from doorknobs to bathtubs to chandeliers, all of it used and vintage. As you can see from the images, there is a lot of interesting stuff. In Memoriam: Doris Doerfler
Today we remember Doris Doerfler, who was a lifetime member of the Portland Photographic Society. Lifetime memberships are granted to those people who make large positive contributions to the group over time. Doris was a talented photographer who won numerous awards over many years. She twice served as the president of Portland Photographic Society (1995-96 & 1998-00), as well as in many other leadership roles.Doris’ obituary is presented below:
Doris Doerfler, 93, the historian for Sacred Heart Parish in Southeast Portland, died Oct. 27. There was a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart on Nov. 30.
Miss Doerfler was born in Turner, Oregon, on Sept. 28, 1922. She graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School and St. Stephens High School in Portland. She was employed as a secretary and comptroller for Standard Oil Company and Publishers Paper Company.
Through the written word and through her extensive photographic record, she recorded the history of her family and her community. Her photographic subjects range from close-up portraits of animals and flowers to sweeping vistas of the Northwest. In 1991 she won a prestigious award from Eastman Kodak for her photograph of Monument Valley. Her picture was selected as one of the 100 winners from over 200,000 entries. She served as President of the Portland Photographic Society from 1995-96 and again from 1998-2000. She won the Slide of the Year competition from the Portland Photographic Society in 1989 and many other honors and awards. She had over 200 slides accepted into international photographic exhibits.
Miss Doerfler was predeceased by her sister, Florence Schoessler of Portland. She is survived by her brothers, Raymond of Sun City Center, Fl., and John of Portland; 10 nieces and nephews, eight grandnieces and nephews, and three great-grandnieces and nephews.

Halloween Party Photography
A request came through the PPS website for photographers for a Halloween party/fundraiser and PPS members Meei Lum and Susan Sheets decided to give it a whirl.
The witch themed party was held at a large Karaoke venue near downtown Portland. The lighting was challenging to say the least so flashes and reflectors got a lot of use. We managed to get some decent shots and also an invitation to come back again next year. Thanks very much to those who lent us equipment and gave us advice and support, it was helpful!

Opal Creek Field Trip Photos
At the end of October we explored the Opal Creek Scenic Area in the Willamette National Forest. Some of us enjoyed the fall colors and scenery along the trail to Opal Creek and Jawbone Flats and some of us ventured along the Little North Fork of the Santiam River and Cedar Creek. Big trees, waterfalls and the beautiful fall forest provided some wonderful photo opportunities.

On October 17, we took a trip up to Cedar Creek Grist Mill in Southwest Washington. The fall colors were just right, and the weather was dry.
